WE WILL NOT BE BREEDING ANOTHER LITTER OF WHIPPETS, BUT WE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO ADVISE ON HELPING YOU AQUIRE A QUALITY WHIPPET PUPPY, THAT HAS BEEN BRED BY A RESPONSIBLE BREEDER
We've been around sight hounds and running dogs for over 25yrs keeping them as working pets, just how it should be. We think an awful lot of our dogs and we try and give them the best of both worlds, love and companionship at home and praise and affection in the field. We never force our dogs to work, they do it because they enjoy it!!
A little about us
I grew up in a small mining village in North Nottinghamshire where whippet and lurchers were common place, many being owned by miners for racing and for filling the pot when they lost there weekly wage to the bookmakers. I like the nature of a whippet very forgiving and affectionate in the house and a real hunting companion out in the field.
I keep my whippets for work and for companions, they are excellent ferreting dogs and also very good at catching rabbits on the lamp. Jess my original bitch caught in excess of 500 rabbits during her working career. I like the strong type of whippet, a whippet that's capable of doing a days work out in the field and a dog with determination. Since the hunting ban we are only allowed to hunt rabbits and rats legally in the UK, So a whippet is the natural choice of dog to work this quarry on the type of land I work my dogs on.
I sadly lost Jess in May 2009 she suffered a stroke and just never recovered. Jess was the first whippet I owned and is responsible for my passion for the working whippet. Jess's temperament and character was second to none. She always gave 100% in the field and was a pleasure to own.
Whippets are becoming increasingly popular in the working field, what a whippet lacks in size it more than makes up for with determination and the desire to please.
Whippet Showing , Our dogs are bred as close to the kennel club standard as possible and it is our opinion that even though our dogs are bred to work they wouldn't look out of place in the show ring competing at any level.
We built this website to promote the KC registered whippet as a more than capable working dog in it's own right.
We believe in only keeping the amount of dogs that we can work on a regular basis. We can never understand kennels having a high number of dogs. To keep a single whippet working fit is not easy, during the season we are ferreting at least 2 days a week as well as lamping. During the summer months we road walk our dogs 3-4 miles a day and allow them 1/2 hours free running to keep them in as near working condition as possible.
PLEASE BEWARE OF THE PUPPY FARMERS WHEN BUYING A WHIPPET PUP
Over the past 5 years the whippet has become more popular, with this demand has obviously increased for whippet puppies. This has encouraged people to breed pups just for money, they breed as many litters as they can from there bitches often breeding twice a year from the same bitch, registering one litter with the kennel club and selling the other litter unregistered. The most worrying thing is these people are doing this with more than one bitch, often 3-4 bitches a year. These people breed for the sake of breeding and just to make money. They use any stud dog available and no thought has gone into breeding the litters at all.
We advise everyone to do there homework when looking for a whippet pup, asking a few simple questions soon sorts out the puppy farmers from legitimate breeders that have bred a litter for all the right reasons. here are a few questions that any legitimate breeder would be happy to answer.
1} are they keeping a puppy themselves?
2} why did they breed the litter?
3} how long have they been keeping and breeding whippets?
Some show kennels will breed a litter every year to help to fund show entries and travel expenses to the shows, We don't have a problem with this at all. Show entries are very expensive and more often than not the breeder with have thought long and hard about which stud dog to use. They will pick a dog that will compliment the bitch and they will be happy to give you the reasons why they used a particular dog. They will also usually keep a pup back from the litter for themselves.
Most reputable breeders will also ask you as many questions as you ask them, many will also put restrictions on the pups. Endorsements are common, and will prevent the puppies owners from registering any future litters from the pup. The breeder will often lift these restrictions if you ask them for help in picking a suitable stud dog and if you are breeding for the right reasons.
It is the case of buyer beware I'm afraid and it's very sad to see the large numbers of litters advertised on the internet, often displaying photographs of poorly reared pups with pot bellies and hairy coats. If you do have any concerns about any advertised litters we are happy to advise you accordingly if you contact us.
Breeding a litter isn't a decision that should be taken lightly, it takes an awful lot of time and hard-work to rear a litter properly. We only breed when we require a puppy ourselves. All the pups homes are vetted and have to agree to our terms before we even consider them to have one of our pups. We think an awful lot of our dogs, to us there not just dogs there family and we don't want any of our pups getting into the wrong hands.
'Vixen out ferreting waiting for a rabbit to bolt' Nov2009
Since the age of 8 I have been involved in country sports, I got my first ferret at the age of 11. I also went beating for local farmers and gamekeepers which I still do today accompanied with my Labrador 'Fern'. We also pick-up on 2 shoots throughout the shooting season.
Throughout the winter months we go out ferreting and lamping with the whippets, We are very privileged in that a number of local farmers allow us to work our dogs and ferrets on there land, in return we control the rabbit population on there land, reducing crop damage and increasing the profitability of there land. If you would like us to control rabbits on your land and you live within an hours travelling time of Bawtry (southYorkshiree) please get in touch . We are fully insured as are our dogs, our dogs are stock broken and all boundaries and land will be fully respected. We will always let you know when we are on your land, we also contact the police prior to going out lamping, to let them know when and where we will be. We offer this service free of charge as we get a lot of pleasure in seeing our dogs working. We never work more than two dogs at any one time and our dogs are fully trained and under control at all times
If however you do live further afield we may still be able to help if you wouldn't mind paying our diesel costs.
If you are new to ferreting or a seasoned ferreter we do offer ferreting days, where you will accompany us for the day. We can Taylor make the day depending on your experience. We use a variety of nets including traditional long nets and purse nets. You will also get some of the catch prepared for the table to take home. We do regret however that we are unable to let you bring dogs with you on our ferreting days. We have to respect the farmers that have kindly given us permission to control rabbits on there land, they know and trust our dogs and will not allow strange dogs onto there land. If you are interested in one of our ferreting days please get in touch as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. We only run a few of the ferreting days a season, so please book early to reserve your day. You will get to see our dogs working alongside the ferrets and witness for yourself how effective whippets really are if trained and entered correctly.
